Respiratory System
Bear lungs are quite large and their breath rate is 6-10 breaths per minute at rest. When hot or over-worked, that rate can jump up as high as 40-80 and sometimes over 100 breaths per minute. Oxygen intake is cut in half during hibernation.
Circulatory System
A normal heart rate is 98 beats per minute while awake and walking. When sleeping, their heart rate drops to 40 or 50 bpm. Their actual circulatory system is similar to a human's. It includes one heart and a series of several veins.
Nervous System
Grizzly bears have a central nervous system with nerves and a spinal cord.
Parts of the brain:
(1) cerebral cortex
(2) thalamus
(3) midbrain
(4) pons and medulla
(5) cerebellum
The structures referred to above as well as the hypothalamus and pituitary gland control the bear’s actions. These include avoidance, aggression, learning and memory, hibernative, and reproductive behaviors.
