Locomotion
Grizzly bears walk with plantigrade locomotion, meaning they walk with the podials and metatarsals (the soles of the feet) flat on the ground. Like humans, bears first strike the ground with their heels, and then roll forward and off of the balls of the feet and the toes. Mammals that walk with plantigrade locomotion include humans, bears, racoons, rabbits, skunks, rats, mice and hedgehogs.
Grizzly bears are also adept at both running and climbing. Bears (in general) are sometimes referred to as the ATV's of the animal kingdom as they can move in any terrain. When alarmed, they are able to stand on their hind legs and show off their massive size to any threatening species. They can also run up to speeds of 30 mph.
